🗺️ Day 1 Morning: City Center
Start your day at the Millennium Park on Mary Slessor Avenue, open from 7 AM to 7 PM, for a leisurely walk and breakfast from nearby vendors. Then head to the National Museum Calabar on Calabar Road, which opens at 9 AM and charges a small entry fee of about 500 naira. The walk between the two takes roughly 10 minutes, or you can take a keke napep for around 200 naira.

After lunch, visit the Calabar Gallery on Ekpo Abasi Street to admire contemporary Nigerian art, open from 10 AM to 6 PM. The gallery is a 15-minute walk from Bedwell Street, or a 5-minute keke ride.

🌳 Day 1 Evening: Relax by River
In the evening, take a stroll along the Calabar River waterfront near the Marina Resort, which offers scenic views and fresh air. Enjoy dinner at one of the riverside restaurants, such as the Marina Resort Restaurant, where a meal costs around 3,000 naira. The area is safe and lively until about 10 PM, and you can easily catch a taxi back to your hotel.

🐒 Day 2 Morning: Wildlife Encounter
Begin day two with a visit to the Calabar Drill Monkey Ranch on the outskirts of town, open from 8 AM to 5 PM, with an entry fee of 1,000 naira. The ranch is about a 30-minute drive from the city center, so arrange a taxi or take a bus from the main terminal for around 500 naira. Spend the morning learning about conservation efforts and seeing the rare drill monkeys.

🏖️ Day 2 Afternoon: Beach Time
After the ranch, head to Tinapa Beach Resort, a 20-minute drive away, where you can relax on the sand and enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the beach shacks for about 2,500 naira. The beach is free to enter and open until sunset. If you prefer a pool, the Tinapa Lakeside Hotel offers day passes for 5,000 naira.

Duke Town Cemetery, quieter than the museum.

Solid plan but day 2 is packed. Tinapa is nowhere near the drill ranch, so budget more time than 20 mins. Also skip the beach shacks and eat at Paradise Point instead.

nice writeup, saved me some planning. one thing tho, the museum on Calabar Road was closed for renovations when i passed by last month, so check ahead. Watt Market on a saturday is chaos, go early or skip it.

🦍 Drill Ranch Primate Haven
The Drill Ranch in Calabar is a conservation center for endangered drill monkeys and other primates. Located at BCC Road, off Mary Slessor Avenue, it's open daily from 9am to 5pm with a modest entry fee of around 1,000 naira. Go early to catch feeding time, when the drills are most active, and don't miss the canopy walkway for a bird's-eye view of the forest.

🏛️ Slave History Museum
The Slave History Museum at Marina Resort tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade with a focus on Calabar's role. Entry costs about 500 naira and it's open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The guided tour is worth the extra tip, as guides share personal stories that bring the exhibits to life.

🌿 Botanical Gardens Stroll
The Calabar Botanical Gardens, near the Government House on Barracks Road, offer a peaceful escape with labeled plant species and a small zoo. It's open daily from 8am to 6pm, and entry is free, though donations are welcome. Weekday mornings are quietest, perfect for a leisurely walk or a picnic under the shade trees.

🎭 Cultural Festival Calendar
Calabar hosts the annual Calabar Carnival in December, a month-long event with parades, music, and dance competitions. If you're visiting in 2026, check the exact dates, usually from December 1 to 31, and book accommodation early. Other cultural highlights include the Calabar Festival in April, featuring traditional wrestling and boat races.

🛍️ Watt Market Bargains
Watt Market is the place to go for local crafts, fabrics, and souvenirs. It's open daily from 8am to 6pm, but arrive early for the best selection. Haggling is expected, so start at half the quoted price and be prepared to walk away if the deal isn't right.

🍲 Edikang Ikong and More
No trip to Calabar is complete without trying Edikang Ikong soup, a local delicacy made with pumpkin leaves and waterleaf. Head to Atimbo Kitchen on Marian Road for an authentic version at around 2,500 naira. For street food, try the roasted plantain and fish at the Marina Resort evening market, open from 5pm to 10pm.

🚤 Marina Resort Boat Rides
Marina Resort offers boat rides along the Calabar River, with prices starting at 2,000 naira per person for a 30-minute trip. The best time is late afternoon when the heat subsides and you might catch the sunset. Life jackets are provided, but confirm safety equipment before boarding.

🦋 Butterfly Garden Visit
The Calabar Butterfly Garden, located within the Botanical Gardens, houses over 50 species of butterflies. It's open from 9am to 4pm daily, with a small entry fee of 300 naira. The guides are knowledgeable and will point out rare species, making it a hit with kids and photography enthusiasts.

Duke Town is worth an hour if u like old architecture, the prefab houses from the 1800s are still standing along Duke Town Road. Also tinapa (smoked fish) from the market near the quay travels well if ur heading home after

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

the marina resort boat ride is way better at low tide, river gets choppy around midday tbh

Good list. One thing it misses: the drills at Drill Ranch are far more active before 10am, so 9am sharp is worth the early start. Also skip Watt Market on Sunday mornings, most stalls stay shut till noon.
