Secundaria Memories?

If your tia graduated from there a while back, the celebration has changed a bit over the years. These days a lot of the secundarias in the city coordinate their altars through the same municipal contest, so Juan de la Barrera's setup is impressive but not as huge as it was in the 90s. The neighborhood ones around SM 64 and the big altars at Parque de las Palapas are honestly where you'll see the most elaborate work now. If you time your trip for late October, walk the streets in that area the evening of Nov 1, that's when families set up the real show.

Worth knowing that Juan de la Barrera runs two shifts, matutino and vespertino, and the altar usually belongs to whichever turn is on that week, so the evening event people mention is often the vespertino one. Your tia probably remembers the matutino version if she went in the morning. Either way you won't get past the puerta without a parent or an ex-alumno vouching for you, the conserje at the entrance on Chichen Itza is strict about that. If you can't arrange it, the altars inside the Palacio Municipal courtyard on Avenida Tulum are open to the public and honestly rival what the school does.

juan de la barrera is on av chichen itza in sm 64, pretty close to the mercado 28 area. they still do the altar de muertos every year, usually around oct 31 to nov 2, and yeah the students go all out with the cempasuchil and papel picado. thing is its a public secundaria so you cant just walk in off the street, you gotta know someone or catch the evening event when they open it to families. if your tia still has contacts there thats ur best bet, otherwise the big public altars at palacio municipal or the ones in the sm 64 neighborhood are easier to see

my tia subbed there for a semester & said the notebook thing is real but its not about predicting anything. she just recycles the same 5 questions every cycle so by week 3 everyone whos been paying attention already knows whats coming. the actual chaos is the morning shift, kids hopping the fence by the cancha to grab tortas before the 7am bell.

honestly the psychic thing is mostly just kids being dramatic. my neighbor's kid went there and swore she keeps a little notebook with every class's weak spots, like she knows exactly who didnt read the chapter. tbh thats less ESP and more her just paying attention for 20 years. also the lunch chaos is real, that whole stretch near Av. Chac Mool gets nuts around 2pm when everyone spills out.
