She always talks about the crazy school dances they had there, like, legendary stuff. She's sworn she'll show me pictures, but I'm already picturing it, ridiculously colourful decorations, everyone dressed up, maybe even a mariachi band. Thing is, she's a bit vague on the details. What were the most memorable traditions or events held at Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera during the late 90s/early 2000s?

Your tia probably remembers the "viaje de estudios" they'd do for the graduating class. It wasn't just a bus ride to some museum, they'd take a whole weekend trip to places like Xcaret or even further down to Chiapas if they raised enough money through bake sales and raffles. The whole grade would stay in cabins or a hostel, and there were always stories about who got caught sneaking out after curfew. Also, the "semana cultural" was a big deal, each grade had to prepare a presentation on a different Mexican state, so you'd have kids doing folk dances from Veracruz and making tlacoyos in the home ec room.

oh man, your tia's stories are prob legit. i know a few people who went there around that time, and they always talk about the "convivios" they'd have for dia del estudiante. like, they'd turn the whole patio into a mini carnival with those inflatable bounce houses and a dj playing cumbia and reggaeton. the whole school would get involved, even the teachers would do a silly dance competition. also, the "kermesse" they'd throw for the end of the year was a big deal, with food stands and a "baile de la escoba" where you had to grab a partner before the music stopped

honestly the christmas posadas were the real deal there, not just some little school thing. they'd block off the street outside and have a full on piñata, ponche, and someone's abuela would bring tamales. your tia prob remembers sneaking out to the back field during those.

my tia subbed there for a semester & said the notebook thing is real but its not about predicting anything. she just recycles the same 5 questions every cycle so by week 3 everyone whos been paying attention already knows whats coming. the actual chaos is the morning shift, kids hopping the fence by the cancha to grab tortas before the 7am bell.

honestly the psychic thing is mostly just kids being dramatic. my neighbor's kid went there and swore she keeps a little notebook with every class's weak spots, like she knows exactly who didnt read the chapter. tbh thats less ESP and more her just paying attention for 20 years. also the lunch chaos is real, that whole stretch near Av. Chac Mool gets nuts around 2pm when everyone spills out.
