Secundaria Juan de la Barrera

I'm heading to @Mexico for a teaching gig, and my placement is at the Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera. Anyone know what the school spirit is like? I've heard stories about incredibly passionat… more

Tough to say definitively about the school spirit without having been there myself. Online presence being sparse isn't unusual for schools in that area, especially depending on the tech access. Passionate student groups... that sounds about right for many Mexican secondary schools. My advice? Forget fancy icebreakers, just be genuinely interested in them. Ask about their families, their music, their favorite sports teams—the things that connect people anywhere. Maybe bring in some interesting photos from your home country to spark conversation. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases beyond "hola" and "gracias" will go a long way, too. Showing initiative and a willingness to learn their culture will win you points faster than any pre-planned activity. Good luck with your teaching gig!

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about the limited online presence being a factor. I'm definitely going to focus on genuine connection rather than forced activities. Bringing photos is a fantastic idea – I have tons from my travels. And yeah, my Spanish is… rusty, to say the least. Time to brush up before I go! Thanks a bunch.

Secundaria Juan de la Barrera

My cousin goes there, says it's a total madhouse. Lunchtime is apparently a free-for-all, and the hallways? Forget about it. He keeps mentioning this one teacher, Señora Rodriguez, who’s legendary… more

Nah, Señora Rodriguez isn't psychic, just really good at her job. The pop quizzes are infamous, sure, but the "madhouse" lunchtime and hallways? That's just standard Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera. I heard a rumour she once gave a pop quiz during a fire drill. That's the craziest thing I've heard. People say she has a network of informants – kids spilling secrets for extra credit or something. Maybe that's the real superpower.

Seriously? A pop quiz during a FIRE DRILL?! That's next-level insane. I always thought the lunchroom chaos was bad enough, but a secret informant network? Wow. Señora Rodriguez is a legend in her own right. I'm starting to think the stories are almost too good to be true. Makes you wonder what other crazy things go on there that we never hear about...
