honestly the guide is solid but they slept on the biryani scene. head to Singh Restaurant on Moi Avenue for the best chicken biryani in town, it's this tiny place with blue tables and they've been doing it since the 80s. 450 KES for a massive plate with raita and it comes with a hard-boiled egg on top, the rice is so fragrant you can smell it from the street
if you're around on a friday evening check out the night market at Kongowea, it's chaotic but the grilled fish there is unreal. they do whole tilapia with this tangy tamarind sauce for like 300 KES, way cheaper than the tourist spots and fresher too. just bring cash and watch your pockets in the crowd
also the guide mentioned halwa but not the good stuff. go to the spice shop on Biashara Street run by this old Swahili guy named Mzee Ali, he makes it himself and it's way better than the packaged stuff. 250 KES for a block and it's softer and less sweet than what you find in supermarkets
ngl the guide nailed the basics but missed one thing - the viazi karai at the night market near the old town gate after 9pm is way better than the afternoon ones. the lady with the blue cart on the corner of Ndia Kuu and Biashara Street does them fresh, she's been there since like 2018. costs 60 bob now but worth it.
also if you're doing the dawa cocktail at Tamarind, skip the restaurant and just hit the bar upstairs around sunset. same view, same drinks, half the price. the bar snacks are decent too, the coconut shrimp is like 600 KES.
one thing I'd add is the fresh coconut water from the guys on Mama Ngina Drive near the roundabout. they hack it open with a panga right in front of you, 50 KES for a big one. perfect after walking around old town in the heat.
oh man the breakfast spot at Jahazi Coffee House is legit, their uji (fermented porridge) with a side of mahamri is my go-to after a night out. costs like 250 KES total and hits different when you're hungover. also if you're near the old fort area around 5pm there's a guy selling grilled mabuyu (baobab seeds) for 20 KES a cup, sweet and spicy and perfect for snacking while you walk

this is a solid plan, you've pretty much covered the essentials. one thing i'd say is for the tuk-tuk from old town to nyali, negotiate before you get in. they'll quote 500 but 300 is fair if you're firm, especially if you're going straight to the beach. also, the rooftop bar at nyali cinemax is decent but the real sunset spot is the one at prideinn hotel next door, it's a bit quieter and the drinks are cheaper by like 100 ksh. for the wasini trip, the dhow ride itself is the highlight, the snorkeling can be hit or miss depending on the tide so ask the operator what time you'll be in the water. overall you're gonna have a great time, the food alone is worth the trip
