The menu is creative; it reminds me of the pintxos or tapas, but in a Japanese way. The dishes are well presented, small, and made with quality ingredients at an honest price.
if you're into the tapas style thing, check out Kiraku in Ebisu. it's been around a while so not exactly new but the menu changes constantly and they do these tiny plates like ankimo with balsamic or shirako tempura when its in season. sit at the counter and just point at whatever looks good, staff are used to it. budget maybe 6-8k per person with a few drinks, more if you go wild on sake.
Sansai is solid. For something in the same vein but more standing-bar energy, try Stand Bar Shinsuke in Kagurazaka. It's basically a tiny standing izakaya where the chef does these little kaiseki-ish plates, like a cold corn potage with uni or duck with sansho, all for like 500 to 900 yen a plate. No reservations, you just squeeze in and eat fast, which is half the fun.
oh man if you liked sansai you'd probably dig ouca in shimokitazawa. it's run by a guy who used to work at narisawa so the plating is next level but it's super casual, no white tablecloth vibes. they do these small course sets that change with the seasons, like one time i had a smoked mackerel with persimmon that was wild. just be ready to wait a bit since it's tiny, like 8 seats at the counter

yeah the walk from the station is longer than it looks on maps, maybe 8 min. their sesame one sells out early so go before noon. fwiw i think it's better than the chain spots around there.
the back street exit saves u a few min vs the main station approach, ngl i grab a plain one there when sesame's gone
