Best wildlife reserve near Tokyo for a day trip?

fmd_goodWildlife Reserve · #wildlife #tokyo #reserve
Been meaning to check out a wildlife reserve outside the city before it gets too hot. Anyone been to one recently, and is it worth the trek in 2026? Been meaning to check out a wildlife reserve outside the city before it gets too hot. Anyone been to one recently, and is it worth the trek in 2026?

Ueno zoo, weekday morning before 9

Zoo's not a reserve though, and the question was about getting out of the city, so I'd point them toward the Tama Zoological Park or the Fuji Safari Park instead.

fuji safari park, go before the buses roll in

fair but the animals are all in enclosures there, if you want actual wild stuff head to the Okutama satoyama area instead.

Second this, but go on a Wednesday when the school groups thin out

Image isedore local ·

yeah but 9 is already late for the panda house, locals queue from 8:30 on saturdays

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image melissaher… local ·

honestly the panda queue is chaos even at 8, try a random tuesday instead if u actually wanna see them

Before 9 works but the west gate opens at 9:30, so you'd just be standing outside the shabushabu place on the corner.

west gate's the one by the monorail station, opens 9:30 sharp

best time to visit Inokashira Wildlife Park in Tokyo 2026

fmd_goodWildlife Park · #park #tokyo #squirrel
honestly the Inokashira Wildlife Park bit is small but chill, way less crowded on weekday mornings. anyone know if teh squirrel trail is still open in 2026? heard they were doing some work on it honestly the Inokashira Wildlife Park bit is small but chill, way less crowded on weekday mornings. anyone know if teh squirrel trail is still open in 2026? heard they were doing some work on it

The squirrel trail (risu no michi) reopened last spring after the netting repairs, so it should be running through 2026 barring anything new. Go right at 9:30 opening, the squirrels are hungriest then and you'll have the path mostly to yourself. Weekday mornings also mean the zoo gate on the Mitaka side has no queue, unlike weekends when it backs up past the benten pond.

yeah 9:30 is right, but the line actually forms at the Kichijoji side gate too once the park fills up. grab a coffee at the little stand near the pond first, works out better.

Squirrel feeding closes at 4, not dusk.
