Nature parks in Tokyo too crowded in 2026?

been going there since before the inbound boom so no ur not imagining it. if u can swing a flex day the monday holidays are weirdly dead, everyone clusters around sat/sun. also check the park's live congestion map on their site, it updates hourly now & the far trailhead usually reads green even when the macaque deck is red

that congestion map is the real tip, ppl sleep on it. fwiw the monday holiday thing only holds for the ones that dont fall next to a bridge day, then its a zoo again.

honestly the crowds are real, not your imagination. go at 9am opening on a tuesday, the macaques are calmer before the tour buses hit around noon. far side trails are still the move after that.

Tuesday's also cheaper, weekend entry's 500 yen now.

Agree, the rain keeps the tour groups away too.

the monorail side gate, opens same time, way fewer people

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down
Image kati local ·

Gate's cash only, no IC cards.

Image theresia local ·

good call on that gate but it's closed mondays for maintenance, caught me out last month. also the path from there dumps u onto the upper trail first so u skip the main queue entirely

Weekday mornings also mean the first Yamanote train crowd hasn't cleared the trailhead yet, so you get a good 20 minutes of quiet.

macaque deck's way calmer once the koyo crowd thins in early dec

What's the story behind Local House in Tokyo?

fmd_goodLocal House · #tokyo #church
I walk past Local House on my way to the station most mornings and I've always wondered what goes on inside. It looks like a church from the outside but I've never seen a service listed anywhere. Anyo… I walk past Local House on my way to the station most mornings and I've always wondered what goes on inside. It looks like a church from the outside but I've never seen a service listed anywhere. Anyone know if it's an active congregation or just an old building that got repurposed?

Worth checking the noticeboard by the gate, there's usually a flyer for whatever's renting it that month. Last I saw it was a jazz trio doing Saturday afternoon sets, which explains the noise you might hear on your walk.

It was built in the 1920s as a chapel for the foreign community, and the little graveyard behind the hedge is still technically consecrated ground.

Image elise local ·

that building's been a few things over the years. pretty sure it's a small language school / event space now, they do the occasional thing on weekends but nothing you'd call a congregation. the bell tower's just leftover from when it was a chapel

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down
Image katarinara… local ·

the language school thing closed a while back i think

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

Image helene local ·

Pretty sure the language school packed up last year, so it's mostly just sitting empty now.
