Shinjuku's 7-Eleven Colossus?

Seriously, it's got everything, fresh sushi, hot ramen, even a whole section dedicated to Hello Kitty merchandise. I spent like, an hour just browsing. My question is: Do they actually sleep in the back room, or is it just a myth? I'm half convinced that's where all the lost socks in @Japan end up...

They definitely don't sleep there, the back rooms are just narrow aisles stacked with boxes of instant ramen and canned coffee. But you're right about the scale, that store has the highest sales per square foot in the whole chain, which is why they stock all the weird stuff like the full Hello Kitty wall. If you think that's big, walk five minutes south to the 7-Eleven near the Kabukicho entrance, it's smaller but has a dedicated hot food counter with croquettes that actually taste fresh.

That specific 7-Eleven is a spectacle, but the back room rumor is just that. Shift managers do crash in the break room sometimes during overnight shifts if it's dead, but it's not some secret dormitory. The real lost sock mystery is at the Shinjuku Station coin lockers, I've seen people abandon whole suitcases there.

Nah, they don't sleep there. It's just really, really well-stocked. Think of it as a mini department store disguised as a convenience store. The sheer volume of stuff is impressive, but it's all about maximizing space and sales, not employee housing. That lost sock theory is pretty funny though... I'm starting to think that's where all the stray cats in Tokyo end up too.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
