Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

Apparently, it's the place to grab a ridiculously late-night snack, the kind of place where salarymen in suits are rubbing shoulders with cosplayers. My question is: what's the weirdest thing you've ever seen bought there at, like, 3am? I'm picturing something truly bizarre. I'm already prepping myself for some seriously over-the-top bento boxes. I need to know if the hype is real. Is it all just a carefully crafted urban myth or is this convenience store actually some kind of portal to another dimension?

ngl the real weirdness is the transactions that make zero sense together. saw a girl in a full lolita coord buy a pack of onigiri, a single banana, and a can of chu-hi at 4am. not weird individually but the combo was just... chef's kiss. also the staff never reacts to anything which somehow makes it weirder

It's real, but the portal dimension part is the sheer variety of human misery and joy packed into those fluorescent lights. I once saw a guy in a full tuxedo, clearly coming from a wedding or something, meticulously comparing two different brands of egg salad sandwich for a solid five minutes. He finally picked one, bowed slightly to the sandwich, and left. The staff didn't even blink. The bento boxes are fine, standard Family Mart quality, but you're there for the people watching, not the food. Go late on a Friday, grab a spot near the coffee machine, and just watch the show.

The hype is real, but maybe not in the way you're imagining. The weirdest thing I've seen there at 3am wasn't a snack, it was a guy calmly buying a single stick of butter and a bottle of cheap shochu, no bag, just walked out. The real magic is that every single person in there is having their own completely unhinged little moment, and it's totally normal.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
