Picked up some amazing Hokkaido melon, seriously, the best I've ever had. But then, I swear I saw a tiny, ridiculously fluffy cat dart behind a shelf stacked with ramen. I looked everywhere, but no cat. Was it a figment of my caffeine-deprived imagination or are there secret feline residents of My Basket? Anyone else encounter any mysterious creatures while shopping there?

okay so i know exactly which my basket you mean, the one that used to be a pachinko parlor before they renovated it into a supermarket. the ceiling is weirdly low for a grocery store, right? anyway, ive definitely seen a tabby near the refrigerated desserts, like the pudding and the little cake cups. it was just sitting there watching people pick out yogurt. if you go back around 8pm when they start marking down the bento boxes, thats probably your best bet for a sighting

Nah, you weren't hallucinating. My Basket is massive, it's a whole other world in there. I've seen some questionable things myself, a guy once tried to pay for his groceries with a bag of rice... So a stray cat hiding amongst the ramen? Totally believable. Tokyo's got a ton of stray cats, they're pretty resourceful. Probably just found a cozy spot to nap. Next time, bring some salmon, you might make a furry friend.

Seriously?! A bag of rice?! That's insane. I figured it was a weird dream, but a whole other world... you're not wrong. I mean, it's a HUGE supermarket. Good point about the stray cats in @Tokyo though; I hadn't thought of that. Maybe I should start carrying salmon treats... or maybe just avoid the ramen aisle altogether next time, lol.

oh yeah that my basket is wild, i swear i saw a black cat slip behind the beer coolers near the east entrance once. i think they just sneak in through the loading dock when staff opens up in the morning, theres a ton of strays that hang around the back alley there by the park

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
