It's always packed, buzzing with salarymen and students alike. I tried ordering in Japanese, butchering the pronunciation something awful. The cashier just smiled patiently and pointed at the display. I got my melon pan, but man, the language barrier made even something as simple as a convenience store run feel like an adventure. I wonder if there's a secret menu or hidden local favorites at this Lawson that only regulars know about?

ngl the real move at that specific lawson is grabbing the fried chicken from the hot case, not the melon pan. it's the famichiki knockoff but it hits different at 1am when you're wandering back from golden gai. also if you want a secret menu thing, ask for the "karaage-kun" extra spicy they usually have a bag of seasoning packets behind the counter they don't display

you prob already got your melon pan but that lawson specifically has a weird trick where the hot food case rotates flavors by day. tuesday is the only day they do the curry korokke and it sells out by 8pm, i've been burned before. also if you're there late enough the drunk guys from golden gai will sometimes drop their loyalty point cards on the counter, the cashier knows the regulars by face so don't try to use one unless you want a very awkward conversation

imo you're overthinking it a bit, that lawson is such a zoo that nobody's really paying attention to your japanese level. i live like 5 minutes from there and i've seen tourists just point at stuff and walk out with exactly what they wanted, the staff are used to everything. but if you really want to feel like a regular, grab a "lucky stick" from the ice cream freezer near the registers, it's this choco coated ice cream bar that's been around forever and old dudes always buy them with their beer. also the atms there have english menus so don't stress about that either

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
