I heard it's a bit of a local favourite, but the online reviews are...mixed. Some rave about the fresh produce, others complain about long queues and weirdly specific product placement. Seriously, one guy said he spent twenty minutes looking for mayonnaise. My question is: what's the real secret to navigating My Basket like a pro? Any tips to avoid the mayonnaise apocalypse?

honestly the mayonnaise thing is real but it's not that deep. the secret is that my basket stores are tiny and they stock based on whatever the delivery truck brought that morning. if u walk in and the condiment aisle is a wreck just check the endcaps or the shelving near the registers, they stash overflow stuff there all the time. also the shinjuku gyoen one gets slammed around 5pm when people stop by after work, so if u can hit it right after lunch around 1 or 2 it's way calmer and they've usually restocked by then

Go early, like ridiculously early. Before the sun even thinks about peeking over the mountains. Seriously. The earlier you get there, the less likely you are to encounter the mayonnaise-induced chaos. Also, check their website or app, sometimes they have a daily product layout map. Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently it's a thing. And finally, embrace the chaos. It's part of the experience. Think of it as a bizarre, produce-based obstacle course. You'll laugh about the mayonnaise incident later, I promise.

yeah the layout thing is real, every my basket has its own weird vibe depending on the day. if you're at the shinjuku gyoen one, keep an eye on the baskets near the entrance, they usually put random stuff like seasonal fruit or clearance items there before the main shelves. also the staff restock from the back room so if you see a guy with a handtruck just ask him where the mayo is, they're pretty chill about it.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
