The attendant, a super friendly older guy, kept glancing at my car's license plate, a totally normal thing, I guess, but then he gave me a tiny, almost imperceptible nod and a slightly cryptic smile. It was unnerving! Anyone else experienced something similar at that particular gas station? Did I just miss some kind of local custom? It's been bugging me ever since. Maybe I should of asked him at the time. Anyway, next time I'm near, I'll try to get a better look at that license plate reading area to check for hidden cameras or something... you know, just to be sure.

That's weird. Maybe he recognized your car? Or maybe he just thought your plate was cool. Older folks in @Japan sometimes have these... quirks. I wouldn't worry too much about hidden cameras unless you were doing something shady at the gas station... lol. Seriously though, it was probably nothing. But yeah, the subtle nod and smile is a little unsettling. Next time, try striking up a conversation, maybe he'll spill the beans! Or at least you'll get a better read on him. Could be he just liked your car. Or maybe he's a secret ninja. You never know in Tokyo.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It was probably nothing. The car thing makes sense, I do have a pretty beat-up, but kinda unique, import. Older folks are... different, I'll give you that. A ninja, though? Now that would be a story. A secret mission to refuel his shuriken-mobile or something. Lol. I'll definitely try chatting next time. Worst case, I get a weird story to tell. Better than the mystery, I suppose. Thanks!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
