I loved the feeling of stumbling upon hidden shrines tucked away in unexpected corners, felt like I was uncovering secret treasures. The locals were incredibly friendly, always willing to offer directions, even if they couldn't speak much English. But my biggest struggle was finding a decent ramen place! Every noodle shop I found either closed early or had a line stretching around the block. So, what's the best kept secret ramen spot in Matsunoki?

honestly the ramen situation in matsunoki is rough because most places are either tourist traps or the ones locals actually go to are hidden in basements or behind curtains with no signage. there's a tiny spot on the backstreets near the old post office called menya kuruma that does a killer shio ramen with a citrus twist, no english menu and only about 8 seats. they close at 2pm usually and the line is never more than 3 people because nobody knows about it. also worth grabbing a bowl at the conbini on the corner of matsunoki 2-chome if you're desperate, their counter noodles are surprisingly decent for 500 yen.

You're not wrong about the ramen hunt in that neighborhood. Most people miss that there's no real "ramen alley" in Matsunoki, it's all scattered. Head toward the small shopping street along the old canal, the one with the faded blue awning over the fish shop. There's a place called Torishin that does a chicken paitan so rich it sticks to your ribs, they only do about 40 bowls a day and start serving at 11. I've never waited more than ten minutes because it's tucked behind a laundromat with no sign in English.

there's a place called misoya on the back alley behind the post office, they do a miso ramen with roasted garlic that's unreal. no sign, just a red curtain and the old lady who runs it barely speaks but she'll remember your face if you come back. closes at 2pm and only does maybe 30 bowls a day

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
