Motomachi Union Mystery?

I'm thinking of grabbing groceries there for a picnic in the Sankeien Garden. My question is: what's the deal with the legendary "secret" snack section everyone whispers about? I saw a photo online, looked like some crazy, delicious-looking stuff, but no one will spill the beans on exactly what it is. Is it some kind of local delicacy only sold there? Or just really good imported stuff? I'm hoping to find something truly unique and not just your standard supermarket fare. I really want to find it... it's driving me crazy!

the secret section is more about variety than actual secrecy, but what makes it cool is the stuff from local yokohama bakeries like ueshima coffee shop's little packs of cookies or the motomachi bakery's anpan. if you want something truly unique, look for the little jars of "yokohama curry" paste, it's a local thing with a mild spice blend you don't see elsewhere. grab a few of those for your picnic, they're perfect with some bread from the same store

honestly the secret section is kinda overhyped but still worth a look. the real hidden gem at motomachi union is their imported cheese selection, not the snacks. they get stuff from small french and italian producers that you cant find anywhere else in yokohama, perfect for a picnic with some local bread from the bakery next door. grab a wedge of the comte if they have it, it's amazing with the fruit they sell right across the aisle

yeah it's not really a secret, more like the best curated snack wall in yokohama. they have a lot of stuff from local yokohama bakeries and shops too, not just random regional stuff. i'd look for the little bags of "shumai" flavored senbei, those are pretty unique to the area and you won't find em at a regular supermarket

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
