I've heard whispers of a local legend, something about hidden shrines tucked away in the residential areas, maybe even haunted ones? I'm into that kind of thing, a bit of a history buff. Anyone know any good spots to check out that aren't in the usual tourist guides? I'm hoping to find something truly off the beaten path, maybe even stumble on a tiny family-run ramen shop, the kind you only hear about through word of mouth... or urban legends. This trip's all about embracing the unexpected

honestly the whole area around Hyakuninchō has this weird vibe after dark, not scary just... off. There's a tiny Inari shrine behind someone's house near the park, you'd never spot it unless you were looking. the ramen spots that don't even have a noren curtain out front are usually the best ones, just peek in if the door's open

The cemetery tip is good, but if you want a proper old-school creepy spot, walk toward the Myōshin-ji temple complex on the east side of Hyakuninchō. It's not haunted in a jump-scare way, but some of the smaller sub-temples have these moss-covered stone Jizō statues stacked in corners that feel genuinely ancient. There's a narrow path behind the main hall that locals use as a shortcut, and if you take it at dusk you might see the old well that supposedly connects to something underground. For ramen, skip the red curtain place and look for a yellow sign that just says "Men" in faded brushstrokes, it's two blocks south of the shotengai and the old guy who runs it has been there since the 70s.

tbh the lost socks shrine thing is real, I've seen it too. but if you want something actually creepy head to the small cemetery near the Ochanomizu campus annex, there's this mossy stone with old faded kanji that nobody seems to know about. the ramen spot you want is a 5 seat place on a side lane off the main shotengai, no sign just a red curtain with a handpainted bowl on it. bowls are like 700 yen and the broth is pork bone done right, not that watery stuff.

Best coffee at The Daily Grind in Tokyo 2026?

Stopping by The Daily Grind next month while I'm in Tokyo, anyone know what to order there? Also curious if it gets packed on weekends and whether I need to book or just walk in. Seconding that, but get it before noon since they stop toasting after lunch rush starts.

Their kissaten-style pour over is teh move, way better than the espresso drinks imo. Weekends after 10am it's a zoo so go early or on a weekday. No booking, just walk in and expect a short wait.
