My aunt, who lives in the area, swears the building has a weird energy...like, a subtle hum that she can only feel on certain floors. She reckons it's linked to some old legend about the land it's built on. Anyone else felt anything odd there? Is it just her, or is there actually something to this "hum"?

i know exactly what your aunt means. there's this weird low frequency thing on the 4th floor near the dialysis unit, i had a relative there a few years back and it gave me a headache after an hour. the building is literally wedged between the old shinagawa jōsui canal route and the yamanote line tracks, so it's probably just the ground transmitting train noise through the steel frame. if you want to avoid it entirely, stick to the outpatient wing on the south side, it's on thicker concrete slabs

honestly i think your aunt might be onto something, at least partially. shinagawa has a lot of reclaimed land from the old days, and some of it used to be marshland or even execution grounds back in the edo period. the hospital itself is pretty modern though, built in the 90s i think, so the hum could just be the hvac system or the basement generators, they get loud on certain floors near the mechanical rooms. if you wanna test it, try the 3rd floor near the east stairwell around 2pm, that's where the maintenance guys told me the pipes resonate weirdly one time

I've actually heard about this from a nurse I know who works there. She mentioned the hospital's foundation sits on part of the old Tokaido road, and there's a small shrine tucked behind the building that marks where an old post station used to be. The hum might be from the subway lines running under Shinagawa Station, they're pretty deep but the vibrations carry through the bedrock. If you want a quieter spot, try the waiting area on the 2nd floor near the west entrance, it's the newest wing and much better insulated.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
