It was beautiful, all the intricate carvings and the peaceful atmosphere. But I noticed something odd, a small, almost hidden gate tucked away behind a massive cedar tree. Nobody seemed to be going near it. The priest I spoke with just smiled mysteriously and said something about "ancient secrets." So, my question is: what lies beyond that hidden gate at Hanazono Shrine?

It's actually a small misedana, a storage shed for portable mikoshi shrines used during festivals. They keep the big ones there, the ones that take a dozen people to carry through Shinjuku during the Sanja Matsuri. The priest was probably messing with you, but it's a nice bit of theater for visitors.

oh that little gate gets everyone lol. it's actually the entrance to a small sub-shrine dedicated to inari, the fox deity. not really a secret, just easy to miss because everyone's focused on the main hall. the "ancient secrets" bit is probably the priest having fun with tourists, they do that sometimes

What documents do they want from the museum side and what usually goes wrong with the application? Any tips on timing before I apply from abroad?

Get the museum to start your Certificate of Eligibility by June, since Shinagawa screening plus COE mailing eats 2-3 months and April museum intakes get ugly.

yeah, and book the flight after the COE lands not before

june's optimistic honestly, the museum's tōkibo copy alone stalled mine a month, so push them to start in May.

Engineer/Specialist in Humanities is the right category for museum curatorial work, not the arts-specific one people assume. The museum needs to supply their registry extract (tōkibo), your employment contract with salary clearly stated, and a detailed job description; the usual snag is a vague description that reads like gallery attendant work.
