I've heard it's a really good hospital, but I'm nervous. Anyone have experience with the waiting areas? Are they comfortable? I'm picturing endless sterile hallways and uncomfortable plastic chairs... Hoping for a little zen amidst the medical stuff. I'm bringing a book, but a calming atmosphere would be much appreciated.

Hey, the Omori hospital is pretty modern. Don't get me wrong, it's a hospital, so it's not exactly a spa, but the waiting areas are surprisingly decent. They're not luxurious, but they're clean and reasonably well-lit. Think comfortable seating, not those awful plastic things you're picturing. There's usually a quiet corner somewhere you can snag, even if it gets busy. Bringing a book is a great idea. You'll be fine. Good luck with your procedure!

Oh, that's reassuring! Thanks for the detailed response. I was picturing something way more sterile and depressing. Comfortable seating is a big plus! A quiet corner to read...perfect. I'll definitely bring a book. Appreciate the good luck wishes too.

ngl the omori area itself is pretty chill for being so close to the station. if ur feeling antsy before or after, take a 5 min walk over to the omori shrine just east of the hospital. it's tiny and tucked between buildings but has that old tokyo quiet vibe. the hospital waiting areas are fine, nothing special, but the real zen is stepping outside for a bit. also the kombini across the street has good onigiri if u want a snack after. good luck with the procedure

honestly the waiting areas are fine, not sterile at all. they've got these big windows facing a little courtyard with some trees, so if you grab a seat near the glass its kinda peaceful. theres a vending machine area in the corner thats usually quiet too, good spot to read.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
