Shinjuku 7-11 Enigma

Seriously, it's like a mini-department store crammed into a convenience store format. I went there late one night, completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff. Found everything from fresh sushi to actual hot meals, plus some seriously niche Japanese snacks I'd never seen anywhere else. My question is: how do they possibly keep track of inventory in that place?! It's madness... pure, beautiful, delicious madness.

one thing nobody's mentioned is the waste management side of it. that store has a whole system for tracking what doesn't sell and adjusting orders instantly, so they don't just toss tons of food. i saw a worker scanning expired bento boxes into a tablet once, and apparently that data feeds back to the warehouse to reduce next day's order for that specific item. it's pretty wild how they've turned the whole thing into a closed loop, especially since most convenience stores in other countries just write off the loss and move on

They actually have a dedicated logistics center in Nerima that serves all the Shinjuku area stores. The trucks run on a tight schedule, dropping off partial pallets every few hours rather than one big delivery. I've seen the overnight crew at that specific location, there's usually about 8 people working during restock hours, each with a specific aisle assignment. The store manager I talked to once said their handheld scanner system updates the central warehouse in real time, so if someone buys the last egg sandwich at 2am, the next truck already knows to bring two more.

A friend of mine used to work at that exact location, and he said the trick is that the whole store layout is actually designed to minimize walking distance. Every shelf height, every aisle width, even the placement of the registers is calculated to cut seconds off restocking routes. He claimed the manager timed them with a stopwatch during training, and if you took more than 90 seconds to refill the chip section, you had to redo it until you got faster. The back room has a whiteboard showing the exact stacking order for each delivery truck, so they can unload in the sequence they'll restock, not the order the boxes come off the truck.

Best coffee at The Daily Grind in Tokyo 2026?

Stopping by The Daily Grind next month while I'm in Tokyo, anyone know what to order there? Also curious if it gets packed on weekends and whether I need to book or just walk in. Their kissaten-style pour over is teh move, way better than the espresso drinks imo. Weekends after 10am it's a zoo so go early or on a weekday. No booking, just walk in and expect a short wait.
