Shinjuku Late Night Run?

Grabbed some onigiri and a Pocari Sweat, the usual. But I noticed this weird, almost metallic tang to the onigiri. Anyone else experienced this? Maybe it's just me being tired... or was it something else? Seriously, tasted kinda off.

honestly it's prob just the specific batch you got. Family Mart by the east exit near Lumine 2 is usually hit or miss after midnight, they rotate stock differently than the 24h ones further down Yasukuni-dori. next time grab the salmon or mentaiko ones from 7-Eleven instead, their rice holds up better in the warmer cases

ngl the metallic taste might be from the warmer case not being cleaned properly. i've seen that happen at the Family Mart by the Shinjuku south exit gachapon area, the one open 24/7. their onigiri sits in those glass cases way longer than they should. if you're taking the shinkansen from Shinjuku Station proper next time, swing by the 7-Eleven inside the station near the Odakyu Line platforms instead. their tamago onigiri is usually fresher and they rotate stock faster cause of the commuter rush even late at night

Weird. FamilyMart onigiri is usually pretty consistent, even at that hour. Maybe they had a bad batch? Or maybe it was just the combination of being exhausted and the late-night Tokyo vibe messing with your taste buds. It happens! Did it smell off at all, or just taste strange? If the smell was also unusual, then yeah, I'd be inclined to think something wasn't quite right with that particular onigiri. Next time, maybe try a different convenience store, there are a ton around Shinjuku Station. Safe travels to @Kyoto!

Yeah, that's a good point about the Tokyo vibe thing. I was so tired, it's entirely possible my tastebuds were just shot. It didn't smell off, which is what makes it so weird. Just...off-tasting. Thanks for the tip about trying a different konbini next time, I'll definitely do that. Hopefully, my Kyoto trip will be less...onigiri-incident-filled!

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
