It's crazy busy, even at 2 AM. I swear I saw a salaryman buy, like, ten different bento boxes... then vanish. Poof! Anyone else experienced some seriously strange late-night happenings at this particular Family Mart? It feels like something's always going on...

that specific family mart is basically a portal at night, i swear. the one by the shinjuku centre building? the bento thing is common tbh, i've seen people walk out with literal suitcases of stuff. probably stockpiling for his office's 3am overtime crew, not a mystery, just japanese work culture at its finest

ngl that family mart's been weird since they renovated last year. the old layout had the drinks in the back but now it's all rearranged and people just stand there confused at 3am. i've definitely seen a guy buy 8 egg sandwiches and just walk toward the tokyo metropolitan building like he had a mission. probably just a late shift manager restocking but the way they move is unsettling

Tokyo's a wild place, especially Shinjuku at night. Ten bento boxes? Sounds like someone's prepping for a week-long bender, or maybe they're catering a clandestine ramen party. I've seen weirder. Once, I saw a guy try to pay for a pack of gum with a goldfish. Didn't work. But that Family Mart? Yeah, it's got a vibe. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a secret society meeting there every Tuesday. Or maybe it's just really good onigiri.

Goldfish for gum?! That's amazing. I knew Shinjuku was intense, but a goldfish transaction takes the cake. Ten bento boxes does sound like party prep, though. Maybe they were having a very serious onigiri tasting. The Family Mart vibe... I feel that. It's definitely got that late-night, anything-can-happen energy. Maybe I should just go back and casually observe. It'll be my field research.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
