Finding a good Ramen shop nearby?

The staff are incredible, but my Japanese is... well, let's just say ordering food is an adventure. I'm craving some authentic ramen after a long shift, something other than the hospital cafeteria fare. Any recommendations for a place within walking distance? I'm tired and just want delicious noodles.

honestly just look for a place with a red lantern outside and a noren curtain, that's usually a solid bet. if you're near a bigger hospital like Tokyo Medical University in Shinjuku, try Menya Musashi - their niboshi ramen is super intense and savory, perfect for post-shift cravings. the ticket machine has pictures so you just point and pay, no japanese needed.

You didn't mention which hospital, but if you're anywhere near a station, most ramen shops have a ticket machine at the entrance. Just put money in and press the button with the picture that looks good. No Japanese needed. If you're in a central area like around Tokyo Station, try Rokurinsha for tsukemen, the dipping noodles are worth the usual line. The broth is thick and rich, really hits the spot after a long shift.

yeah not knowing which hospital makes it tricky but if you're near anything in the yamanote line loop, try afuri. they do a yuzu-shio ramen that's lighter than the heavy tonkotsu stuff, perfect when you're wiped out and don't want something that'll put you in a food coma. the broth is citrusy and clear, hits different after a hospital shift. most locations have english menus on the tablet at your seat too

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
