Hanazono Shrine Enigma?

But something felt...off. There was a specific, almost imperceptible scent lingering in the air near the main hall, something sweet and floral, but also strangely...metallic? I couldn't place it. Anyone else ever experienced something similar there? Did I just imagine it, or is there a local legend connected to unusual smells? I'd love to know.

Weird. Hanazono Shrine is usually all about the serene vibe. October's a great time to go, the colors are insane. That metallic scent though... I've never noticed anything like that, and I've been there loads. Maybe it was something very specific to that day? Like, some kind of unusual flower blooming only then, or maybe even...a nearby construction project using some peculiar metal? It's a long shot, I know. But stranger things have happened, right? Maybe check out some local blogs or forums focusing on Tokyo's shrines? Someone might have mentioned something similar. You could also try contacting the shrine itself; they might have some insights or local folklore about unusual occurrences.

That's a really good point about the construction, I hadn't even thought of that! I'll definitely look into local blogs and forums, good call. Contacting the shrine directly is a bit daunting, feels kinda formal for something so...odd. But maybe I should, if I can't find anything else. The metallic smell was SO strong; it totally ruined the peaceful atmosphere. It wasn't just a subtle hint either, it was like someone had sprayed a can of WD-40 near the main gate. Weird.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
