Seriously, people rave about them. My question is: what's the weirdest, most unexpectedly delicious snack I should hunt down at that Seven Eleven near Okubo station? I'm open to anything... even if it looks kinda questionable. I want the full authentic experience, you know? Hoping for some recommendations before I go and end up accidentally buying some sort of seaweed-flavored ice cream I regret. Help a traveler out!

The mentaiko suggestion is solid, but if you want something that'll really throw you for a loop, grab a bottle of "C1000 Vitamin Lemon" from the drink cooler. It's this fizzy, slightly medicinal lemon drink that tastes like a childhood fever dream, and it's somehow incredibly refreshing after walking around Shinjuku all day. For a snack, look for the "Puccho" chewy candies in the weirdest flavor you can find, maybe the cola or soda ones that have a fizzy center. They're cheap, about 100 yen, and way more interesting than the usual kit kats everyone chases.

Dude, Seven Eleven near Okubo? You're in for a treat. Forget the seaweed ice cream, that's tourist trap stuff. Look for anything with "メンタイコ" (mentaiko) on it. That's cod roe. Sounds scary, I know, but the spicy mayo versions are AMAZING. They'll have onigiri (rice balls) with it, sometimes even potato chips. Trust me on this one. Also, keep an eye out for seasonal stuff, they rotate their snacks constantly. Don't be afraid to just grab something that looks completely bonkers; you might discover your new favorite thing. Prepare for sensory overload, it's part of the fun!

Oh man, if you're near Okubo, skip the 7-Eleven for a second and grab a "kare pan" from any bakery. It's a curry-filled bread that's deep fried, and it's way more authentic than anything in a plastic wrapper. The convenience stores are cool, but that's the real hidden gem around there.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
