Hi, I am wondering if this is a common thing in Tokyo as I haven't experienced this in other countries/places.

Ever since a lady on the train sat next to me smelled like wildfire/campfire smoke, I have been smelling it periodically every now and then. First it was when I had my vent open, but I closed it and it stopped. However, this morning I kept smelling it while getting ready plus a few days had already passed. Leaving my apartment, I smelt nothing, but now at the station and on the train, I smell it again. I also smell it a bit in my office.

Is this a Japan/Tokyo thing? Like mold or certain cigarette smoke? I get the same feeling in my nostril as wildfire/campfire smoke. Did the lady actually smell like smoke or is it due to a different reason common in Japan?

Why is it only my apartment, at the station, on the train, and in my office?

honestly that sounds more like the smell of burning trash than cigarette smoke. some neighborhoods in tokyo still do garbage incineration locally and the smell can travel weird through ventilation systems. my apartment in nakano gets it sometimes in the morning when they're doing the burn cycles.

could also be the heating systems, a lot of older buildings here use kerosene heaters that put out a distinct smoky smell when they first fire up. if ur apartment has a central system or shared vents that could explain why it follows u around.

Yeah, that's likely just the smell of cigarette smoke or maybe someone burning incense. It's pretty common here, and it tends to stick to clothes and hair and then just kind of wafts around. Might be your neighbor or someone you passed on the street.

oh for gods sake. its just tatami mats. nobody tells tourists about them but old tatami gets this specific smoky musty smell once the humidity changes. your building prob has tatami rooms somewhere and the smell travels thru the shared air ducts. youll get used to it or move to a

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
