Does your Japanese wife link your salary to your free time?

She says it kind of jokingly though. I'm just wondering if anyone has a Japanese partner who lets you do more if you bring in more money

that's kind of a wild system but I get why she frames it that way. my wife never tied it to salary directly but she did track how much I was "present" vs "productive" which felt similar. honestly if you're in Minato or something a lot of the expat husbands I know just hire a housekeeper and suddenly no one cares about gaming hours. maybe ask her if she'd rather you work more or just pay for a cleaner so you both get more free time

ngl that's a pretty specific arrangement lol. my wife's more like "if you're home you're helping with the kids" regardless of what i earn. but I've heard some couples in Setagaya where the wife basically runs a points system for chores and free time, salary just means you outsource more stuff like house cleaning or meal prep. maybe she's half joking but it's worth asking if she'd actually track it or if it's just a vibe thing

Not exactly the same, but my partner's more about quality time than dollars. She doesn't care how much I make, but if I'm zoning out on games while she's around, that's the issue. Maybe yours is just trying to get you to be more present, not literally putting a price on your hobby.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
