Can I open a local account on a tourist or work visa, and how long does it usually take near somewhere like The Spot? Also curious if my foreign debit card works at most ATMs or if I should bring cash for the first week.

Two weeks for the PAN first.

Getting the PAN through an agent near the station cuts it to about a week if you pay a bit extra, so it's worth asking around. Just make sure the address on it matches what you'll show the bank later, otherwise you're back to square one.

yeah and double check the agent actually files it, a few of them just pocket the fee & u find out weeks later

Image myriam local ·

kotak lets u open with just passport & visa but the forex markup on ur foreign card at local atms will sting

Near The Spot there's a HDFC and ICICI within walking distance, but you'll need your PAN card and a local address proof before any bank even looks at you.

axis bank on the linking road side is faster with an employment letter

Fair point on the PAN, but the address proof can be a leave and license agreement plus a utility bill, which the bank's relationship manager will usually help you draft.

arrow_drop_up 19 arrow_drop_down
Image steffie local ·

True, though the leave and license needs registration at the sub-registrar first, otherwise the bank won't touch it as proof.

Only if the agreement is stamped and registered first.

Bharat on Lamington Road is a decent old-school bar, cheap drinks and no pretension, but it's a locals' peg-and-chakna spot rather than a night out.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down
Image nicole local ·

Fair warning: the kitchen shuts early, so treat it as a drinks stop before 10pm rather than dinner.

Tuesdays they shut by 9:30.

Image ines local ·

True, and the last order for food is usually around 9:15, so don't bank on a late bite there.

Yeah the peg-and-chakna read is spot on. Only thing I'd add is the AC section upstairs is where you actually want to sit in summer, ground floor gets muggy by 8. For a proper night out most folks I know walk over to the Grant Road side instead.

the chakna spread is the real draw tbh
