weekday mornings are worth it, saturday the lake trail is packed by 7:30. i'd go oct to feb, that's when the winter migrants show up and the variety jumps. summer u get the regulars mostly, still decent at dawn though.

Agree on the October to February window, though late November is when the numbers really peak, the flamingos and waders fill the shallows then. If you can only do one trip, pick a weekday right after a rain spell, the trails are empty and the birds are out drying off.

7am is fine but honestly 6:30 beats it, the first hour after gate opening is when the kingfishers and bulbuls are actually active before the joggers arrive. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dead quiet, barely a soul on the lake trail. October's your sweet spot, just after the monsoon when the ground is still wet and the migrants start trickling in.

Tuesdays beat Thursdays actually, the garden crowd clears out by 8 and the lake trail stays empty till almost 9.

Local House temple visit, what should I know for 2026?

Do I need to cover my head or take shoes off before entering, and is there a decent time to go that isn't packed?

shoes come off at the steps, that's non-negotiable. head cover isn't really a thing at most local mandirs here, but keep shoulders & knees covered. go before 8am or after 7pm to skip the aarti rush

Local House is in Kalbadevi, so factor in the Crawford Market crush

Crawford Market crush is real, so come from the CST side if u can. The lane into Kalbadevi gets jammed with handcarts by mid morning, go early or you'll be stuck.

Fair point on the timings, though Tuesdays and Saturdays get mad busy with bhaktas so pick a weekday if u can.
