City Market Mumbai grocery prices 2026: fair or tourist tax?

fmd_goodCity Market · #market #prices #almonds
I was quoted 400 rupees for a kilo of almonds at a stall in City Market, which felt steep compared to what I pay back home. Is that the normal 2026 rate or was I being given the visitor price? city market is crawford market btw

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

yeah crawford market is the wholesale side, the retail stalls along the main road are where they quote u the tourist price

400 for a kilo of badam is actually not wild in 2026, wholesale badam is running 700-900/kg depending on quality so 400 sounds like the cheap mamra type, not tourist pricing. the real tourist tax at crawford is on stuff like saffron and cashews, where they quote double if u look unsure. walk to the back lanes near the fish section for the actual rates

fair point on the mamra, but the back lanes near the fish section are mostly closed by 2pm so go morning

Badam at Crawford is mostly Iranian, ask for the Kashmiri.

Mamra from Iran, not Kashmir, most stalls stock it.

Was it always this packed or did the word just get out? Curious what regulars do now, maybe go on a Tuesday or hit somewhere quieter in Lower Parel instead.

weekday lunch is the real hack, 12 to 3 the place is basically empty & the kitchen's faster than the evening rush

Lunch works, though the 1pm office crowd from Kamala Mills fills it fast, so aim for noon sharp.

tuesday is genuinely the move there, half the seating empty till 9 & the happy hour rates still apply. weekends blew up after that insta reel crowd found the rooftop around late last year. if u want quiet in lower parel, the beer at brewbot on a weekday is decent & the kamala mills foot traffic thins out post 7 on mondays.

Sunday brunch there is dead quiet till noon.
