Opening a bank account in Mumbai 2026 as a foreigner

You'll need the visa stamped first, so plan on a morning at a bank branch near your office once you land.

yeah visa stamp first is right, but book an appointment online before u go. walk-ins at HDFC and ICICI near BKC eat up half a day. carry ur passport, visa, lease or offer letter and a couple passport photos.

Kotak or Axis, less of a circus.

Bring your PAN or they'll send you back.

morning works but go before 10 or the Andheri branch queue swallows ur whole day

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Andheri east side branches open the counter at 9:30 sharp, so aim for that window instead.

also get ur PAN sorted first or the account stays stuck in paperwork limbo. tbh the branch people wont say it upfront so ask. it takes a week or so if u dont have one already.

Passport photos, two copies minimum.

make sure theyre the proper stamp size ones tho, the guy at the counter rejected my normal photos & i had to run to a studio nearby

true but do the account opening at a branch in ur actual residential area, not near office. KYC address proof gets checked locally & a Lower Parel branch fighting over a Powai address is a headache u dont need

I want to sell my old clothes

arrow_drop_up 96 arrow_drop_down

have u tried the chor bazaar route? not for selling to shops but the friday morning flea guys near mumbadevi, some of them buy vintage/retro pieces outright and pay better than the bale walas if ur stuff has any character. got 800 for a bunch of old levi's and band tees there. thing is u gotta go early like 6am and know how to hold ur ground, they smell desperation instantly

one thing nobody mentioned, watch out for the weight vs piece thing. kabadiwalas and bale buyers pay by kilo so heavy stuff like denim and woolens actually earn more than fancy light stuff. i cleared a whole bag of old jeans to a guy in Malad for way better than what my branded shirts fetched. also wash everything before u show it, sounds obvious but dusty clothes get lowballed on sight.

honestly the timing matters more than the platform. end of month is when people get salary and actually buy, so list ur stuff around the 1st or 2nd. also post pics in natural light near a window, not on ur bed with flash, makes a huge difference on OLX and insta thrift pages. i've flipped a lot of my old stuff this way and the same kurta that got ignored at 300 sold for 500 when i relisted it properly.
