ngl that guide is pretty comprehensive, but one thing i'd add is the samanar hills just outside the city. it's about 8 km from the temple on the way to the airport, a quick auto ride for 150 INR. there's a small Jain cave temple with ancient carvings from the 1st century BCE, and the view from the top over the surrounding fields is really peaceful. most people skip it because it's not in the typical loop, but it's a nice contrast to the chaos of the city center.
also for food, if you're near the palace around lunch, try the kothu parotta at Sree Sabareesh on South Masi Street. they shred the parottas fresh on the griddle with a ton of veggies and it's a filling meal for 80 INR. the place is a hole-in-the-wall with a few plastic chairs but the taste is legit.

solid guide, covers the essentials well. one thing i'd throw in is the rooftop cafes around the temple. there's one called Surya's on East Masi Street, you climb up three narrow flights of stairs and the view of the gopurams at sunset is incredible. they do a decent filter coffee for 20 INR and you can just sit there for an hour watching the temple lights come on. most tourists stick to ground level but that view is worth the climb.
for the Puthu Mandapam shopping, if you're after a sungudi saree, skip the main stalls and go to the back corner near the west end. there's an old lady named Lakshmi who weaves them herself and sells for half the price the front shops quote. she's usually there after 4 PM and doesn't speak much english but she'll understand if you point at the ones on her lap. got my mom one for 800 INR last year and it's held up way better than the ones from the main market.

Day trips from Madurai worth the bus ride?
trichy is the easiest one honestly. buses from mattuthavani run every 15 min or so, takes about 2.5 hrs each way. srirangam temple alone is worth it, and you can hit rockfort on the way back if u leave early.
rameshwaram is doable but its a solid 3.5 to 4 hrs each way, so you'd basically spend 7+ hrs on the bus. not really a day trip imo unless you stay overnight.
kodaikanal bus timings are a mess because of the ghat roads, and it gets cold up there. save that for when you have 2 days.
If you want something nobody mentions, look at Thanjavur instead. Buses from Mattuthavani take around 3 hrs, but the Brihadeeswarar temple is a UNESCO site and honestly more impressive than anything in Trichy. You can also swing by the palace and Saraswathi Mahal library if you've got time. Downside is fewer buses back after 6pm so plan the return carefully.
madurai to thanjavur is decent but honestly the best underrated day trip is palani. buses from periyar stand every 20 mins or so, about 3 hrs. the winch up the hill is the whole point, and you're back by evening. just avoid weekends, it gets packed with pilgrims.
