stay near swaroop nagar or the mall road side honestly. it's not the prettiest but u get the gomti river walk close by and a ton of eateries, from old school chaat spots to proper cafes. if u want quieter mornings, try civil lines, but then u'll be taking autos for everything. for a week, swaroop nagar wins for convenience, plus u can walk to the kanpur memorial church in like 15 mins. just avoid anything near the railway station, it's chaos 24/7 and not the good kind.
honestly for a week i'd say go for the mall road area near phool bagh, not swaroop nagar. yeah swaroop nagar has cafes but phool bagh puts u right next to the kanpur zoo and the old bungalow vibes, plus the chaat at the nana rao park side is way better than anything u'll find near the mall. food-wise u got the classic halsey road stalls for breakfast kachori and then walk over to the ganges barrage for sunset, it's a solid loop. just book a place on the quieter lane off the main road, not facing it, or the honking will start at 6am sharp.

It's about 20 minutes from Colonelganj by auto, and the architecture is genuinely striking with those marble domes and gardens. Entry is free, and the evening light hits the white stone really well around 4 PM. Also, for the Tunday Kababi recommendation, get there by 12:30 PM because the galouti kebabs sell out fast on weekends, and the queue gets long by 1 PM. honestly the guide nails most of it but theres one thing i'd add for day 1 - skip the chappan bhog corner for lunch and go to brijwasi sweets instead, its right off mall road near the phool bagh crossing, their chole bhature is way better than anything at chappan bhog and costs like 80 bucks. also for day 2 the zoo is nice but if you're into birds the kanpur botanical garden is right next to it and has a decent collection, entry is only 20 rupees and its way less crowded. one more thing about the aarti at parmat ghat - try to get there by 5 pm even in winter cause the priests start the chanting early and the best spots fill up fast, theres a small chai stall near the steps that makes good adrak wali chai while you wait.
