🍛 Where to Start
Begin your food tour at the iconic Moti Mahal Deluxe on The Mall, known for its rich Mughlai cuisine since 1920. Their butter chicken and dal makhani are legendary, with a meal for two costing around ₹800-1200.

🥟 Street Food Hotspots
Head to Naveen Market for chaat and golgappa, where stalls like Shukla Chaat House serve tangy aloo tikki for ₹30. For kachori and jalebi, visit the old city near Colonelganj, where vendors sell fresh batches from 5 PM onwards.

🍜 Best Evening Spots
For a relaxed dinner, try Barbeque Nation on Mall Road, offering unlimited grilled appetizers and mains for ₹999 per person. Alternatively, the rooftop at The Landmark Hotel on GT Road provides a great view with North Indian thalis starting at ₹500.

🥘 Hidden Neighborhoods
Explore the narrow lanes of Gwaltoli for authentic Awadhi biryani at Tunday Kababi, where a plate of mutton biryani costs ₹250. Nearby, Prakash Kulfi on Birhana Road serves creamy malai kulfi for ₹50, a perfect summer treat.

💰 Local Prices
Street food meals typically range from ₹30 to ₹150, while mid-range restaurant dinners cost ₹500-1000 per person. Upscale dining at places like Royal Cafe on The Mall can go up to ₹1500 per head, but the ambiance and quality justify the price.

🍰 Sweet Treats
Don't miss the famous petha from Ram Ashrey on Colonelganj, a soft translucent sweet made from ash gourd, priced at ₹200 per kg. For a modern twist, try the gulab jamun cheesecake at The Chocolate Room on GT Road, available for ₹150 per slice.

🥤 Drinks and Refreshments
Beat the heat with a glass of sugarcane juice from vendors near Phool Bagh, costing just ₹20. For a more substantial drink, visit Cafe Coffee Day on The Mall for a cold coffee at ₹150, or try the local lassi at Brijwasi Sweets on Birhana Road for ₹80.

🚗 Getting Around
Auto-rickshaws are the easiest way to hop between food spots, with fares starting at ₹50 for short rides. For a more comfortable option, use app-based cabs like Ola or Uber, which charge around ₹100-150 for trips within the city center.

ngl the guide missed a gem - the bun makhan at singh's stall near bada chauraha around 6am. it's just soft bread slathered in butter with a sprinkle of chaat masala, costs ₹15, and pairs perfectly with a cutting chai from the guy next door. for a proper meal, skip tunday and go to idris biryani in the back lanes of gwaltoli, their mutton biryani has that layered dum aroma you can smell from a block away, a plate is ₹280 and they usually sell out by 1pm. also the kulfi recommendation is fine but the real winner is the matka kulfi outside christ church college on the mall, served in a clay pot for ₹40, way creamier than prakash

the moti mahal original vs deluxe debate is real, the old city one near bada chauraha has that smoky charcoal flavor you just dont get at the mall branch. for breakfast though, nobody mentions the puri sabzi at shri ram bhandar in gwaltoli, its a tiny hole in the wall but they start serving at 7am and the aloo ki sabzi is cooked in desi ghee, costs like ₹60 for a full plate. also the petha recommendation is solid but go to gopal petha near the railway station instead of ram ashrey, they do a saffron one that melts in your mouth for ₹180 a kilo, been around since the 60s

good write up, one thing i'd add is the indo-chinese scene near phool bagh, there's a couple of stalls that do chili chicken and fried rice for like ₹80-100 a plate, the one closest to the park is my go-to after evening walks. also for sweets, the sohan papdi at bikaner sweets on the mall is better than petha imo, it's flaky and melts on your tongue, ₹250 a kilo and they pack it fresh. the moti mahal debate is fun but honestly both have their days, the old city one is unbeatable for that late night fix when everything else is closed

I want easy access to the main sights but also decent food options nearby, so what area would you recommend for a first timer?

stay near swaroop nagar or the mall road side honestly. it's not the prettiest but u get the gomti river walk close by and a ton of eateries, from old school chaat spots to proper cafes. if u want quieter mornings, try civil lines, but then u'll be taking autos for everything. for a week, swaroop nagar wins for convenience, plus u can walk to the kanpur memorial church in like 15 mins. just avoid anything near the railway station, it's chaos 24/7 and not the good kind.

honestly for a week i'd say go for the mall road area near phool bagh, not swaroop nagar. yeah swaroop nagar has cafes but phool bagh puts u right next to the kanpur zoo and the old bungalow vibes, plus the chaat at the nana rao park side is way better than anything u'll find near the mall. food-wise u got the classic halsey road stalls for breakfast kachori and then walk over to the ganges barrage for sunset, it's a solid loop. just book a place on the quieter lane off the main road, not facing it, or the honking will start at 6am sharp.
