πŸ› Where to Start
Begin your food journey at the iconic Aligarh Chicken Corner on University Road, known for its spicy chicken curry and tandoori roti. A full meal for two costs around INR 400-600, and it's open from 11 AM to 11 PM daily.

πŸ₯Ÿ Street Food Hotspots
Head to the bustling Sarai Mian Market for Aligarh's famous chaat and samosas. The stall near the main gate serves crispy samosas with tangy tamarind chutney for just INR 20 per plate. Visit between 4 PM and 8 PM for the freshest batches.

🍨 Sweet Treats
Don't miss the creamy kulfi at Kulfi Wala near Gandhi Park, a local favorite since the 1980s. A single serving costs INR 30, and they offer flavors like pistachio and mango. It's best enjoyed in the evening when the park is lively.

🍜 Must-Try Dishes
Aligarh is famous for its biryani, especially the version at Aligarh Biryani House on Railway Road. Their mutton biryani, priced at INR 180 per plate, is aromatic and generously spiced. Pair it with their raita for a complete meal.

πŸ₯˜ Local Favorites
For a taste of home-style cooking, visit Bhojnalaya on Ramghat Road, which serves thalis with dal, sabzi, roti, and rice for INR 150. The place is packed during lunch hours (12 PM to 3 PM), so arrive early to avoid the rush.

πŸŒƒ Best Evening Spots
As night falls, the food stalls near Aligarh Fort come alive with kebabs and rolls. The seekh kebab at Babu's Kebab Corner, priced at INR 60 for a plate of six, is a must-try. The area is well-lit and safe for evening strolls.

πŸ’° Budget Tips
Most street food items cost between INR 20 and INR 100, making Aligarh a budget-friendly destination. Carry cash, as many stalls don't accept cards. For a filling meal under INR 200, stick to the chaat and kebab stalls in the old city.

πŸš— Getting Around
Auto-rickshaws are the easiest way to hop between food spots, with fares starting at INR 30 for short rides. For a more local experience, rent a cycle from shops near the railway station for INR 50 per day. Most food areas are within a 5 km radius of the city center.

Shahid's biryani is a good call, I'd also recommend the nihari at Haji Nihariwala on the old bypass road, it's only available from 6 AM to 10 AM and sells out fast. For a late-night snack, the egg rolls at the stall opposite the Aligarh Muslim University admin building are fantastic, they stuff them with a spicy onion chutney you won't find anywhere else. One thing the guide doesn't mention is that most places shut down during the Friday afternoon prayer time around 1 PM to 2:30 PM, so plan around that.

the biryani at aligarh biryani house is good but honestly i think the one from a small shop near the aligarh muslim university gate no 1 is better, it's called shahid's biryani and they use a different masala blend. just a heads up, the kulfi wala near gandhi park is only open after 5pm in peak summer, i made the mistake of going at 3pm once and it was closed. also if you're at sarai mian market for chaat, try the dahi bhalla from the guy with the blue cart next to the samosa stall, it's creamier than the others

one thing the guide gets right is babu's kebab corner near the fort, those seekh kebabs are genuinely good especially if you ask for extra green chutney on the side. i'd add that there's a guy selling bhutte ka kees just outside the fort gate around 6pm, it's a seasonal thing in winter and he tops it with fresh lemon and grated coconut for 40 rupees. also if you're at bhojnalaya on ramghat road, their thali is solid but the real move is their special aloo sabzi that they only make on thursdays, it's got this smoky flavor from being cooked in a tandoor

I'd like to cover the usual sights plus some decent food without going overboard, so what's a realistic daily budget for someone traveling on the cheaper side?

everyone's giving u daily numbers which is fine but 5 months out the smarter move is booking the room in advance, not budgeting per day. railway road guesthouses will lock a rate now for 650 to 800 that walks up to 1200 by the time u land, esp if its near exam season at AMU when parents flood in. also nobody's said this but aligarh runs on cash, the ATMs on dodhpur road work maybe half the time so pull 5k before u arrive & keep it split in two pockets. foodwise skip the fancy places and hit the stalls near shamshad market for nahari kulcha in the morning, 60 rupees and itll keep u full till 3pm

if ur doing the cheap route, budget around 1500 to 2000 a day and ull be fine. stay near centre point or railway road, rooms run 600 to 900 for a basic one. food is the easy part, aligarh is dirt cheap, 2 people can eat well at nadeem or dilshad for under 400 total. the fort & sir syed house are basically free or a few rupees, so ur main spend is transport. cycle rickshaws will quote u 100 for a 30 rupee ride, just settle before u sit

the daily number everyone's throwing around is right but nobody's mentioned the museum angle. Sir Syed Academy and the Maulana Azad Library are basically free entry and you can kill a whole afternoon there, so budget more for time than money. where ppl overspend is autos to the fort, it's like 3km from centre point and they'll ask 200, just take a shared auto for 20 or walk it if its not may june heat. for 5 months out id say lock a room now on railway road around 700 and put aside 1800 a day, that covers u comfortably incl the chai stops every 2 hrs which add up faster than u think
