hey all, in Berlin for 5 days from today and would love to shop around for some vintage watches for under <500€.

Where are the best places to do this?

I've heard flea markets are pretty good but my experience the last few weeks throughout Europe is that flea markets are pretty randomly timed and I've always missed them.

Recommendations on markets to go to and / or actual vintage shops that aren't extremely high end like Patek and AP?

You're right about flea market timing, they're hit or miss. For a solid shop that's not intimidating, try Uhren-Schmuck Roth in Charlottenburg near the Kaiser Wilhelm church. They've got a basement section with mostly German brands from the 60s and 70s, lots of Junghans and Dugena pieces under 500. The owners are older and happy to chat about movements.

Another spot is Berliner Uhrenmanufaktur on Linienstraße. It's more of a repair shop but they sell refurbished vintage pieces out of a glass case near the counter. I picked up a working Omega from 1968 there for 380 last spring. They don't advertise stock online so you just have to walk in and see what's around.

honestly skip the flea markets unless you're here on a sunday, then Mauerpark is your best bet but it gets picked over fast. for actual shops, check out Quartier 206 in Mitte - sounds high end but they have a few dealers in the basement with stuff under 500 if you dig. also there's this tiny spot called Kill Your Idol on Torstraße, not a watch shop per se but the owner sometimes has a box of old Seikos and Citizens he'll show you if you ask.

if you're near Kreuzberg, go to Flohmarkt am Maybachufer on a tuesday or friday afternoon - it's mostly clothes and random junk but I've snagged a couple working vintage pieces for like 40€ there. the sellers aren't watch specialists so they just price everything low. for a proper shop, Zeitlos on Oranienstraße has a curated selection under 500 but their stock changes daily so timing matters.

If you're near Schöneberg, stop by Uhren Kania on Hauptstraße. It's a tiny family-run place that's been there forever, they've got a drawer of affordable vintage stuff under 300 that they don't put in the window. Also, check out the Sunday flea at Arkonaplatz, it's smaller than Mauerpark but way more chill and I've found decent working watches there for cheap without the tourist crowds.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
