Freud's Couch?

The IPU is in Wedding, not the most glamorous part of town, but there's a nice little cafe called Cafe Frieda a few blocks away on Triftstraße where you'll probably spot students hunched over their laptops. The archives are mostly at the Sigmund Freud Institut across town, but if you're keen on atmosphere, take the U6 to Leopoldplatz and walk past the old wedding chapel. The contrast between all that history and the IPU's sleek interior is kind of the point of modern Berlin.

honestly if you're dead set on the archives thing, the sigmund freud institut is where you wanna go, not the IPU. they have a proper archive with some original letters and stuff but you gotta book ahead, it's not a walk-in situation. the IPU building itself is pretty sterile, all glass and concrete, but the library on the top floor has a nice view over wedding if you're into that. grab a coffee at Cafe Frieda after, it's the only decent spot within walking distance that doesn't feel like a train station waiting room

ngl the building itself is more of a modern glass box than freud's old vienna setup, so don't expect creaky wooden couches and cigar smoke. but if you walk over to the sigmund freud institut at bergmannstraße 47 in friedrichshain, that's where the actual archives and library are, and they do open days sometimes. the ipu's own library is open to visitors if you just ask at the front desk though, and they have a decent collection of early psychoanalysis journals you can flip through.

Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
