honestly, the Tillmanns Haus is a wild mix of old and new construction. that courtyard you mentioned, there's a small ventilation shaft that runs alongside the 3rd floor rooms. i've heard it can carry sound from the basement quite clearly, like someone talking or moving stuff around. the scratching could be the old heating pipes, they expand and contract a lot in that building. prob not ghosts, just the joys of post-war architecture

Not ghosts, but you're not losing it either. Those 3rd floor rooms sit right above the old boiler room which is still in use, and the ventilation runs straight up through the walls. I've stayed there twice and the scratching is definitely the pipes - they're those old cast iron ones that creak and pop when the heat kicks in around 5am. The whispering could be the night staff doing inventory in the basement storage, the acoustics in that courtyard are weird because of the glass roof they added in the 90s.

I live about two blocks from there and know that building well. The 3rd floor courtyard rooms share a wall with the old fire escape stairwell that's been converted into a maintenance shaft. The scratching you heard is probably the metal ladder rungs expanding and contracting, they're bolted directly into the brickwork and make a terrible racket when the temperature changes. As for the whispering, if you were there on a Thursday night, the Werkstatt für neue Musik has rehearsals in the basement of the building next door and the sound bleeds through the shared foundation. Grab a beer at the little späti on Klopstockstrasse if you're back in the area, they're open late and the owner knows all the building gossip.

Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
