TU Berlin's Secret Societies?

Anyone know the lowdown? Are these things even real? I'm picturing shadowy figures, clandestine meetings, and maybe a hidden library filled with forbidden knowledge. Or, you know, maybe it's just a bunch of nerds playing Dungeons & Dragons. Either way, I'm intrigued. Plus, the campus itself is pretty cool

ngl the whole "secret society" thing at tu berlin is mostly just myth but there are some pretty closed-off student groups that have been around for decades. the akademischer turnverein stuff is real, they meet at specific bars near the campus and have weird initiation traditions, nothing shadowy just old german engineering nerds getting drunk in suits. if you want actual weird campus secrets check out the tunnel system under the main building, some of those passages are locked but you can find entrances near the mathematik building

The Akademischem Ruderverein stuff is real enough, they're more of a fraternity than a secret society. But the real underground scene at TU Berlin is the student-run workshops in the old machine halls on the Ernst-Reuter-Platz side. There's a group that calls itself the "Nachtlabor" that does weird restoration projects on abandoned industrial equipment from the 1960s. They're not secret, just very selective about who they let in because the machinery is genuinely dangerous. If you hang around the physics building after 8pm and look for the door with the red light above it, you might catch someone coming out.

You're not entirely wrong about the nerds playing D&D part, but there's a real layer here. The most talked-about group is the "Akademischer Ruderverein," a rowing club that's been around since the 1880s. They're not secret exactly, but they're intensely private and have a clubhouse near the Landwehrkanal where they hold initiation ceremonies that involve a lot of traditional rowing songs and drinking from a giant wooden cup.

If you want actual hidden spaces, skip the societies and try to find the old student prison in the main building's basement. It's been locked for decades but the door is still there near the Mensa stairs, and some of the graffiti inside is supposedly from the 1920s. Just don't go looking at night, the janitors are not amused.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
