Berlin Wall remnants

You can almost feel the history there, even with all the new buildings springing up around it. I kept thinking about the people who lived through it all...the families divided, the escape attempts. My question is: are there any guided tours focusing on the perspectives of those who lived in East Berlin during the division? I'm keen to learn more from a personal angle, not just historical facts and figures.

Definitely! There are a few options. Check out the DDR Museum, it's not strictly a walking tour, but it offers a really immersive experience of daily life in East Berlin. You'll get a feel for the atmosphere and the restrictions people faced. Also, look into some of the smaller, independent tour operators. They often offer more niche tours focusing on specific aspects of the Wall's history, including East Berlin life. A quick search online should turn up some good leads. Good luck with your search, it sounds like a fascinating experience!

That's great advice, thanks! The DDR Museum sounds really interesting, I hadn't considered a museum at all, I was mostly thinking outdoor stuff. I'll definitely look into those smaller tour operators too; more focused tours are exactly what I'm hoping for. I'm less interested in just seeing the wall itself and more interested in the human stories and the impact on everyday life.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
