Proper way to react to smoking Crack in U8?

I honestly don't know how to react to that. I know tolerance for use of substances is part of Berlin's DNA and for some of us life is quite rough these days, but if there is a line, where do we draw it? When is the other person's freedom inflicting my own?

After the guy left the train, my eyes met those of two other bystanders who looked just as confused and concerned as I felt. The smell of Crack confused those who got in the train.

PS: Maybe it wasn't Crack. It was definitely chemical, it smelled, it came out of one of those typical cone shaped drug containers.

yeah the U8 is its own world. i've seen worse on the U8 near Kottbusser Tor, someone was smoking what looked like meth right next to a mom with a stroller and nobody said a word. the unspoken rule seems to be that you only intervene if it's directly affecting you physically, otherwise you just avoid eye contact.

if you really feel like doing something, the BVG app "Störung melden" feature is actually decent, i've used it for aggressive panhandlers and they did show up at the next stop once. but for crack specifically, they might not prioritize it unless someone's being violent. most people just switch cars and move on, that's the Berlin way.

my personal line is smoke or smell entering my space, that's when it stops being tolerance and starts being a health issue. the U8 is especially bad because the trains are old and the ventilation is crap, so that shit lingers.

honestly, that's a rough one. the U8 is kinda known for being the wild west line, especially around Hermannplatz and Boddinstr. i've seen people shoot up in broad daylight at Kottbusser Tor and nobody bats an eye.

for me, the line is when it affects my air or safety. if someone's smoking anything in a sealed train car, that's not just their freedom anymore, that's me breathing secondhand whatever. i'd prob just move to the next car and mention it to the BVG staff at the next station if you can find them, but tbh they're usually overwhelmed.

some people swear by the BVG app's "Störung melden" feature for this kinda thing, but i've never tried it in the moment. mostly you just learn to pick your battles on that line.

ngl that's a tough one but also just kinda classic U8 energy. i'd just move to the next car and mention it to the BVG security at the station if they're around, but they're usually not. the real pro move is to keep your head down and text the BVG app report, they actually read those sometimes. it sucks but picking a fight over crack smoke in a train car is just not worth it, you'll see way weirder stuff on that line.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
