tbh the timing checks out, those hairs cause reactions within minutes. the fact that you went under might've stirred up hairs floating near the surface, they're tiny but barbed so they cling to skin and mucous membranes easily.

if you want to keep going to schlachtensee, go early morning when the water's calm and the hairs haven't had time to settle in one spot. i'd also skip the head dunk for a while, just keep your face above water. the hairs stick around in the environment for weeks after the caterpillars are gone, especially on windy days they get blown onto the water.

for a change of scenery, try the libben seen or lieper bucht in köpenick, way fewer oaks and the water is cleaner. also grab some antihistamine drops from the apotheke just in case, even if you don't have allergies normally those hairs can trigger a histamine response.

yeah that sounds like the eichenprozessionsspinner hairs alright, they're nasty this year especially around the grunewaldseen. the hairs can float on the water surface for a while, they're super light and barbed so they don't sink easily. they also stick to clothes and towels so wash everything hot if you haven't already.

the hairs stay active in the environment for months honestly, even after the caterpillars are gone. they get blown around by wind and can settle on the water. i've heard of people getting reactions just from sitting on a blanket near the lake.

if you want to keep ice bathing maybe try teufelssee or kleiner wannsee instead, less oak trees there. also rinsing off before you get dressed helps a lot, the reaction gets worse if you rub the hairs into your skin with a towel.

fwiw i've been going to schlachtensee for years and the eichenprozessionsspinner problem seems worse this summer than usual. the hairs are hydrophobic so they float on the surface, especially when the water's choppy. i'd wait til after a good rain or two to let them settle out, or check the wind direction before you go - if it's blowing from the forst direction you're prob swimming in a hair soup

if you're set on staying in the area, try the west side of the lake near the fischerhütte, fewer oaks there. but honestly i'd switch to teufelssee for now, the water is clearer and less tree cover right at the shore. also pick up some fenistil gel from the dm on fontanepromenade, it's cheap and works better than oral antihistamines for the skin stuff

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
