Hi!

Are there any synagogues in Berlin offering Yom Kippur services to non-members? (Not sure if it works the same here, but in my temple, you usually have to be a paying member to attend High Holiday Services).

I'm visiting from abroad and may just go to Chabad if nothing else, but was hoping to go to a temple/synagogue for prayers. I only contacted the Neue Synagogue so far.

I Googled this, but would like to know if anyone has specific recommendations.

Thank you so much in advance!

fraenkelufer is a good bet like someone said, but also check out the sukkah at ohel hachidush in the east, they do a more progressive service and are super welcoming to visitors. no membership needed, just show up a bit early since it's a smaller space. the neighborhood around there is nice for a walk before kol nidre too

the liberal jewish community in berlin is pretty open, most places dont check for membership. fraenkelufer in kreuzberg is another option, they do a nice kol nidre service and i think you can just walk in. just get there early since it fills up fast, maybe 30 mins before. if you want a more traditional reform vibe, pestalozzistrasse is solid but fraenkelufer feels a bit more intimate imo

yeah most liberal synagogues in berlin don't do the membership thing for high holidays, you can just show up. pestalozzistrasse synagogue in charlottenburg usually welcomes visitors and has a solid service, just bring your own ticket from their website beforehand. chabad is fine too but it's a pretty different vibe if you're used to a reform setting

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
