Why do people call Berlin "Berlino"?

I fkn hate the word berlino. Why is it a thing? I feel that i have a way too strong opinion about it but i can't help myself. It sounds so stupid to my ears. I fkn hate the word berlino. You hear it mostly from older Italian tourists, yeah, but it's not just them. Some Berliners who hang around Kreuzberg 61 or parts of Neukölln with big Italian communities will use it ironically, almost like a private joke. I've caught locals saying it with a heavy Italian accent while ordering a cappuccino at a bar on Weserstraße, just to poke fun at the whole thing. The hate is understandable though, it's one of those words that rubs people the wrong way because it feels patronizing, like someone's trying to make the city sound smaller than it is.

honestly i've only ever heard it from italian speakers too, not just older tourists but also some exchange students. the -ino suffix in italian is like a diminutive, so berlino is basically "little berlin" or "cute berlin". kinda like how some people say "berlinchen" in german as a joke, just a different language's version of that

but yeah if you hate it you're not alone, i've seen locals roll their eyes when tourists drop it at a kiez kantine in friedrichshain

it's mostly older italian tourists who say it, italians call cities with -ino for like a cute or familiar version. annoying but kinda just a thing in some languages

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
