Hi everyone,

I'm in Berlin and I cannot for the life of me find fresh crab or fresh crab legs anywhere. Is it illegal? Or can anyone possibly provide some insight on where I can get some?

I was considering taking a drive to Nothern Germany or Poland - but I'd prefer to stay local if possible.

Thank you very much.

honestly, if you want fresh crab without driving to the coast, try the fish counter at Rogacki in Wilmersdorf near Fehrbelliner Platz. they're a proper old-school Berlin deli with a big seafood section, i've seen them have whole North Sea crab on ice sometimes, especially on fridays. their smoked fish is solid too.

another option is the Turkish market at Maybachufer on tuesdays and fridays, there's a fish guy who brings in stuff direct from the Black Sea, not always crab but he'll tell you what's coming next week if you ask. cheaper than the fancy department stores for sure.

if you do drive north, skip Rostock and head to Sassnitz on Rügen instead, it's prettier and the crab is straight off the boats around midday. about three hours from Berlin but you can make a day trip out of it.

Yeah, check out the fish shop at Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg, they get fresh stuff on Thursdays and Fridays, not always crab but worth a look. Or hit up the weekly farmers' market at Winterfeldtplatz on Saturday, there's a fish stand that brings in seasonal catches from the Baltic.

It's not illegal, crab is just not a big thing in Berlin. You'll have better luck at the fish counters in Karstadt Feinschmecker at Hermannplatz or KaDeWe, they sometimes carry frozen North Sea crab legs. For fresh whole crab, try a big Asian market like Go Asia on Kantstraße or Vinh-Loi in Wilmersdorf, they bring in live crab from time to time. If you really want fresh local crab, the drive up to Rostock or Stralsund is about three hours and worth it for the Fischbrötchen alone.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
