Hi there !

I'm planning to settle in Berlin in three months and I booked a room in a hostel while I'm looking for a job and a flat

In France you have to work 3 months to give 3 payslips to your landlord in order to sign a contract How is it in Germany ? Can I rent a flat as long as I have signed a long term contract or do I have a to work a certain period of time to be able to sign anything with a landlord ?

It's basically the same system here, you'll need to show income stability. Most landlords ask for the last three payslips plus your work contract, and they also run a Schufa credit check which is its own hurdle.

Since you're arriving without a job, look into getting a Mietschuldenfreiheitsbescheinigung from any previous landlord if you have one. Without that and without German income, your best bet is temporary furnished apartments on sites like Wunderflats or HousingAnywhere, they're more flexible with international tenants.

honestly, payslips are pretty standard here too. most landlords will want the last 3 months of Gehaltsnachweise, same as in France. a signed contract alone usually isn't enough unless you're earning really well and can prove it right away.

since you're coming without a job yet, you might need to offer 3-6 months of rent upfront or get a Bürgschaft from someone in Germany. some landlords also accept a blocked account if you have one for your visa. check around Neukölln or Wedding for cheaper flats where landlords are less strict about paperwork.

Pretty much the same as France, yeah. Most landlords will want to see your last three payslips alongside the contract to prove you're actually earning that money. Without a job already, you'll probably need to offer a bigger deposit or find a temporary sublet first to build up some local history.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
