Hi,

I somehow ended up in Berlin. I am a German citizen but lived the last 10 years in Switzerland. I am now in Berlin having my sim card on air mode, getting internet from the infrequent visits of hotels and the railway and subway stations.

What I am missing are power outlets to charge my laptop. I know that the alexa offers 1h of charging but mostly for phones and I have not tired it, yet.

Today I want to ask in libraries, if I can use their place to charge my laptop and even start working.

Since I am very old (45) already, I do not qualify as the typical university student. So sitting in the University library would be a bit difficult as I am the one who might get asked for credentials rather quickly.

Thanks.

honestly at 45 you're way overthinking the university thing. the HU main library on unter den linden has a public reading room, no student card needed to get past the entrance, just walk in like you own the place. the stabi on potsdamer straße is even better, huge open spaces and outlets everywhere, plus it's a state library so it's literally for everyone.

if you want to avoid the institution route, try the cafes near kottbusser tor, lots of them have power strips under the window seats. or hit up a dm or rossmann, some of them have charging stations near the entrance, weird but works. also the s-bahn ring trains have outlets under the seats, if you're riding around anyway, just plug in while you commute.

libraries are actually your best bet and nobody checks credentials at the main ones. the zentral- und landesbibliothek on blücherplatz has open work spaces, free wifi, and plenty of outlets, just walk in and sit down, no card needed for the reading areas. also try the amerika gedenkbibliothek near hallesches tor, it's quieter and has a cafe inside. if you want to avoid the library vibe, starbucks on friedrichstraße lets you sit for hours with a coffee, but the outlets there are hit or miss. honestly the alexa thing works fine for laptops too, just bring your charger and plug into the big charging trees near the info point, it's free for an hour and nobody checks what device you're charging

another trick that works well: the charging lockers at some of the newer U-Bahn stations. at frankfurter tor and alexanderplatz they've got these free lockers with usb and a regular plug inside, you lock your laptop in for 30 min and it charges while you grab a coffee nearby. no app needed, just a code you set yourself.

if you're near charlottenburg, the stadtbibliothek there has a proper "digital work corner" on the second floor, no membership required for walk-ins, outlets on every table. quieter than the big ones and the staff won't even look up.

also worth knowing: the refurbed stores, like the one on torstraße, let you test their used laptops and have charging stations right by the door. you can stand there for a while pretending to browse, nobody's clocking you.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
