How do I find out the age of my Berlin apartment block?

Hi!

I need to find out the age of this property to do some calculations to figure out whether I'm being overcharged for utilities. Is there a website where I can put in my address and it can give me an approximate idea of the age?

Berlin's open data portal has a WFS layer called "Gebäudealter" you can hit directly, but honestly the faster path is the Geoportal Berlin map viewer, toggle the Baualter layer, zoom to your block. It shows decades, not exact years, but for utility math that's plenty. One thing nobody mentioned: your Grundbuchauszug sometimes lists the Baujahr in the Bestandsverzeichnis, costs about 10 euro at the Amtsgericht and takes a few days.

Check the Berliner Mieterverein website, they have a Baujahr lookup tool that pulls from the same data but with a friendlier interface than the Geoportal. Costs nothing if you're a member, small fee if not.

Another angle nobody mentioned: your Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from when you moved in sometimes has the Baujahr listed, and if your landlord uses a big Verwaltung like Deutsche Wohnen or Vonovia their online portal usually shows it in the Objektdaten. Worth digging through your move-in paperwork before paying for a Grundbuchauszug.

The Berliner Geoportal (FIS-Broker) has an "Gebäudealter" layer that shows construction year ranges by block, its not perfect but good enough for utility math. You can also pull the Baualtersklasse from the Milieuschutz maps if your area has one, those go by decade. For anything official the Bauakte at your Bezirksamt is the real answer but that costs a Gebühren and takes a few weeks.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
