Anyone know where I can find sheep meat? Not lamb, sheep 😁 thx

Looking for some sheep meat for cooking Looking for some sheep meat for cooking

halal butchers are solid but for actual sheep, not lamb, hit up the afghan or iranian shops in moabit. there's one on turmstraße near the lehrter straße corner, they keep whole "gosfand" in the back, ask for it by that word. they'll cut it to order, and they're used to people wanting it for qorma or a proper weekend stew. price is around 9-11 a kilo, and they usually have it fresh on fridays. also, if u see "hammel" on a german menu, that's your word, but a lot of places use it loosely so always ask if it's mature, not just older lamb. for cooking, treat it like a tough cut of beef, sear hard then braise with plenty of liquid, and don't be shy with cumin and coriander, they handle the gamey note better than rosemary imo.

One spot nobody's mentioned yet is the Wochenmarkt at Maybachufer in Neukölln, the Tuesday and Friday market by the canal. There's a Turkish stall there, right at the Hermannstraße end, that brings whole sheep from a farm up near Brandenburg, not just lamb racks. Ask for "koyun eti" and they'll pull out a vacuum-sealed shoulder or leg that's been hanging, it's proper mature stuff with that thick yellow fat. I paid 9.50 a kilo last time and they even threw in some bones for stock. It's a smaller stall, so get there before the lunch rush, the queue builds fast and they do sell out. Also, if you're cooking it, don't bother with a marinade that's all acid, a dry rub with salt, black pepper, and a bit of sumac does more for the flavor than soaking it in milk ever will.

if you're up for a bit of a trip, the weekly market at Boxhagener Platz on saturdays has a guy from a farm in Uckermark, he's got a small trailer and sells whole cuts, mostly to older german ladies who know what they're doing. he'll have "Hammel" if you ask, but don't expect it out on the table, it's in a cooler box under the counter. last time i got a shoulder for 9 euro a kilo, pretty decent. also, if you're not scared of ordering online, there's a site called kaufneuhof.de that delivers from a real farm in Mecklenburg, they do mutton in boxes, around 15 euro a kilo shipped, and it's way more consistent than hunting around the city. just check the delivery days, they only send out twice a month. and yeah, whatever you do, don't skip the long marinade, sheep is not lamb, it'll punish you if you rush it.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
